What is Soul Wars?
Soul Wars is a Jagex created minigame that was first ever introduced on Runescape 3 on the 10th of February 2009. Its addition to OldSchool Runescape was polled and surpassed expectations, which lead to the minigame being added on Old School Runescape on the 6th of January 2021, making it the first major update of 2021!
Getting Started In OSRS Soul Wars Minigame
To get to Soul Wars, one must enter the Soul Wars portal in Edgeville or the Ferox Enclave Dungeon. It is located south-west of the bank, and west of the abandoned mausoleum. After going through the portal, the player will arrive at Nomad’s camp, where players can exchange Zeal for rewards, learn how to play Soul Wars, or join one of two teams to play Soul Wars. The northern region of the lobby area is a safe area from player versus player combat, while the southern region is unsafe and allows PvP combat. |
Requirements and How to Start a Game of Soul Wars
To play Soul Wars, you’ll need:
- A total level of 500 or higher
- A combat level of 40 or higher
- Old School RuneScape membership
You’ll also need to be logged in to the dedicated Soul Wars worlds that as of the 9th of January 2021, these are Worlds 320, 328, 329, 331, 336, 341, 350, 477, and 535!
Once you’ve gone through Nomad’s tutorial, you may enter a game of Soul Wars by stepping into one of the waiting rooms in the lobby. You can choose to join the Red or Blue team by entering their respective waiting rooms, but be aware that if the teams are too imbalanced (either by sheer numbers or Combat levels) then your entry to the stronger team will be blocked.
If you’re undecided, use the green portal to be automatically sorted onto an appropriate team.
When the game begins, you’ll be given a special cape in your team colours – so you’re unable to bring one into the waiting room with you.
Since this is our ultimate Soul Wars Guide, we’re going to give you some PRO TIPs along the way in order to ensure that you are amongst the best playing the minigame!
PRO TIP 1: Additional Requirements
Even though the Official Requirements are as stated above, one will figure out that playing the minigame with such low requirements especially low combat will be very tedious since you’ll be frequently encountering High-Level Players!
One of the current meta is that most players are making use of Ancient Magicks Spellbook in order to take advantage of multi-combat Freeze Spells. In order to counter this, we recommend that the High Magic Defence Armor is used!
Probemas recommends that you have at least the following:

60+ Attack70+ Strength70+ Ranged52 Prayer (For Smite & Protection Prayers) | 70+ Attack70+ Strength70+ Defence70+ Ranged52+ Prayer (For Smite & Protection Prayers) |

The Basics To Soul Wars Minigame and What To Expect
Once the game begins, you’ll start in your base’s graveyard. This can never be lost to the enemy, and you will respawn here on death if you do not own any other graveyards.
Within your team’s base, you will find your avatar and a supply area.
From your supply area, you can collect bandages, barricades, explosive potions, and potions of power. Bandages and potions of power can also be collected from within your base’s graveyard.
What’s an Avatar?
Avatars are essential to victory – the team with the most avatar kills at the end of the game will be declared the winner. While your avatar is very powerful and can defend itself, it can still be overrun by attackers. So you should protect it. If you are not working to defend the avatar, you should push forward, weaken the enemy avatar and attempt to destroy it. |
The Supply Area
From the Supply area, you can collect bandages, barricades, explosive potions, and potions of power from your team base.
Bandages will heal some of your health, cure any poison, and restore your run energy.
Barricades can be used to block enemies from an area. Your team is limited to ten barricades, and you can only take one at a time – so use them wisely.
Explosive potions can be used to instantly destroy a barricade.
Potions of power can be used to boost your combat abilities and restore your prayer.
Soul Obelisk and Graveyards
Located in the middle of the island is the Soul Obelisk. Your team can capture this by having more participants near it than the opposing team.
- Sacrifice Soul Fragments to weaken the enemy avatar.
- Obtain Soul Fragments by killing creatures on the island or defeating enemies will drop any Soul Fragments they are carrying!
There are two capturable graveyards on the island. These can be captured by having more participants near it than the opposing team. But remember – you can never capture the opposing team’s base graveyard.
- Capturing a graveyard will allow your team-mates to use the graveyard as an additional respawn point. Note that you will always respawn at the closet graveyard where you died!
- Burying bones within the graveyard restores strength to your avatar!
PRO TIP 2: Choose the best activity for you!
If you are a low combat player we recommend that you help your team by doing the below activities:
- Killing NPCs for Bones and burying the bones at an Allied Graveyard.
- Killing NPCs for Soul Fragments and sacrificing them at the Soul Obelisk.
If you are a high combat player we recommend that you help your team by doing the below activities:
- Attacking or Defending the Soul Obelisk
- Attacking or Defending the Graveyard
- Attacking the Enemy Avatar or Defending your Team’s Avatar.
OSRS Soul Wars Rewards
By playing Soul Wars, you will earn both Zeal and Zeal Tokens. While Zeal is used to show your lifetime Soul Wars score, Zeal Tokens can be spent on various rewards from the Soul Wars Reward Shop.
Both are given whenever a Soul Wars game ends. The amount depends on your contribution to the game.
The winning team will also receive some bonus Zeal and Zeal Tokens, while the losing team will have some removed.
Experience Reward | Experience in Attack, Strength, Defence, Hitpoints, Ranged, Magic, and Prayer are available. Players must have at least level 30 in the chosen skill to purchase XP for it, and the amount granted is higher if the level of the skill chosen is higher. 1, 10, 100 tokens can be used per purchase. |
Imbues | Imbues from the Nightmare Zone are also available here. However, players who imbued their items at the Nightmare Zone cannot un-imbue their items for Zeal Tokens.Imbuing an item provides extra bonuses. Imbued items can be uncharged, which removes the bonuses from the item and refunds a % of the reward points used to imbue it.Imbuing all available items would require a total of (3,950) reward points. |
Soul Cape | Capes which require level 70 Prayer to equip and gives a +8 Prayer bonus. |
Ectoplasmator | When carried in the inventory, Prayer XP is given for ghostly creatures based on how many hit points they have. |
Spoils of War | Similar to gambling rewards from Barbarian Assault. Players may receive an avatar pet, which can be freely changed between the Lil’ creator and Lil’ destructor appearance. |
Final Thoughts About Soul Wars in OSRS
All in all, this was a well-demanded minigame giving P2P members another place to show off their Combat and Teamwork abilities, however how will this affect other minigames, and the economy of the game remains to be seen.
We feel that the Castle Wars Minigame has been given another blow to its already existing damage as players are now less inclined to play since the release of Soul Wars.
Items such as the Karil’s Armour Set have been increasing in price, similarly to what can be seen from items such as the Elysian spirit shield, Magic Offensive and Defensive armor, and more.
On the other hand supplies such as Raw Fish, Ores, Rune Armour, and certain seeds are expected to decrease slightly in price since the Spoils of war acts as a new way of obtaining such items.
We hope that you’ve enjoyed reading and we wish you luck on the battlefield!
