Mithril dragon/Strategies Guide – OSRS

At level 304, mithril dragons are the third strongest tier of metal dragons. They attack from all sides of the Combat triangle in addition to utilising extra long-ranged dragonfire. Players seeking to kill these powerful dragons will need to tank at least one combat style, or two when fighting within Melee distance.

Dragonfire

It is not recommend to fight mithril dragons without full dragonfire protection, which can be achieved by drinking either a super antifire potion, or a regular antifire potion combined with a anti-dragon shield. Protect from Magic does not reduce the amount of damage taken from dragonfire attacks, as is the case for all metallic dragons.

Equipment

While the most efficient way to kill mithril dragons is by using Magic with a Tumeken’s Shadow, melee alternatives are considerably cheaper and still very effective, assuming that the player has high combat stats (at least 90+), and access to either the Osmumten’s fang or a dragon hunter lance. If the player does not have either the fang or lance, ghrazi rapier and zamorakian hasta are still viable options, however Magic then usually becomes more effective, depending on the player’s equipment. For the best damage output, it is strongly recommended to use a defender and use extended super antifire potions to negate the dragonfire damage, instead of an anti-dragon shield or dragonfire shield.

This specific setup focusses on an offensive approach, resulting in higher kills per hour, at the cost of requiring more attention and supplies than a tank-based method.

When meleeing, players take damage from two combat styles and will have to tank both in order to survive. It is best to wear Torva or Bandos armour for their strength bonus and good defensive bonuses, and use Protect from Magic. If the player does not have Torva or Bandos armour, wearing armour with high Magic defence (such as Karil’s armour or black dragonhide armour) and using Protect from Melee will suffice. Piety should also be used in conjunction with the chosen protection prayer for better damage output and higher Defence.

Inventory

  • A games necklace
  • A teleport[2]
  • 1-2 Divine super combat potions or super sets[3]
  • 1-2 super antifires (Regular antifire if using a shield for dragonfire protection)
  • 4-5 prayer potions
  • High-healing food for the rest[4]

Notes

  1. When using a shield other than dragonfire shield or anti-dragon shield, super antifire (or its extended variant) must be used to negate dragonfire damage.
  2. A one-click teleport like a Teleport to House should be brought in case of emergency
  3. A super set can also be used without the Super defence potion.
  4. Saradomin brews and super restores can also be used, but try to keep the ratio 3:1 of brews to restores.

Magic is the most effective way to kill mithril dragons with high-level equipment. Tumeken’s shadow offers the highest damage output. Using the harmonised nightmare staff and casting Earth Surge also offers good DPS due to the dragon’s 50% elemental weakness to earth spells. Lesser powered staves, such as the sanguinesti staff or trident of the swamp are solid options as well, particularly at high Magic levels due to the way their damage scales with level. At lower Magic levels, it may be better to use strong earth spells to take advantage of the elemental weakness. Compared to Magic, using Melee is much more cost-effective, and the dragon hunter lance offers comparable or higher damage output in most cases. Players should wear equipment that maximises Magic damage and accuracy bonuses. When maging, players should stand at a distance and use Protect from Missiles. Lastly, Augury, Mystic Vigour, or Mystic Might should be used for better damage output and higher Magic defence. If the player is not wearing an ancient wyvern shield or an anti-dragon shield, players must use super antifire potions (or their extended versions) to negate the dragonfire damage.

Inventory

  • A games necklace
  • A rune pouch
  • A teleport[3]
  • Imbued heart or magic potion(s) (optional)
  • 1-2 antifires
  • 4-5 prayer potions
  • High-healing food for the rest[4]

Notes

  1. High level earth spells may be better DPS than powered staves depending on equipment and Magic level.
  2. When using a shield other than the ancient wyvern shield or anti-dragon shield, super antifire (or its extended variant) must be used to negate dragonfire damage.
  3. A one-click teleport like a Teleport to House should be brought in case of emergency
  4. Saradomin brews and Super restores can also be used, but try to keep the ratio 3:1 where it’s 3 brews to 1 restore.

Ranged is a similar option to Magic in that damage taken will be largely prevented by Protect from Missiles and high magic defence bonuses from equipment. Due to the high ranged defence of Mithril dragons, the high Ranged Attack bonus granted against dragons by the dragon hunter crossbow is all but necessary. It is still possible to kill mithril dragons with other crossbows, but Melee and Magic set-ups will outperform the Ranged style with ease. Ruby dragon bolts (e) and diamond dragon bolts (e) are very effective, but come at a high cost and can only be used if using a Dragon crossbow or better. If using enchanted ruby dragon bolts, players should switch to their enchanted diamond dragon bolts at 100-150 HP. Amethyst broad bolts can be used instead as a more cost-effective ammunition alternative, but can significantly increase the time taken for a kill. Players should use Protect from Missiles with Rigour or Eagle Eye. Since Ranged armour has high Magic defence, all magic damage should be tanked but Rigour will be a large boost as unlike Eagle Eye it provides some defensive bonuses of its own.

Inventory

  • A games necklace
  • A teleport[1]
  • 1-2 divine ranging potions
  • 1-2 antifires
  • 4-5 prayer potions
  • High-healing food for the rest[2]

Notes

  1. A one-click teleport like a Teleport to House should be brought in case of emergency
  2. Saradomin brews and super restores can also be used, but try to keep the ratio 3:1 where it’s 3 brews to 1 restore.

While offensive armour is generally better for a high amount of kills per hour, focussing on defensive gear will allow the player to kill mithril dragons with relatively low effort and for extended amounts of kills per trip, making it a viable choice for those intending to grind out many hundreds or thousands of mithril dragons in their hunt for a dragon full helm or draconic visage. The Osmumten’s fang or dragon hunter lance are still the best choice for the weapon, but instead of offensive armour, Justiciar armour (only when wearing the full set) in combination with an elysian spirit shield can be used to effectively block out 15% + 17.5% of all incoming damage. Combined with optional recoil effects from the ring of suffering and echo boots, as well as the healing effect of the amulet of blood fury will make for an incredibly tanky setup that will allow for trips that are only terminated when the player runs out of antifire potions or prayer potions. Using protect from Magic and piety as well as stat boosting potions will greatly help. When no or few specialized tanking equipment is owned by the player, they should consider focussing on offensive stats as listed in the ‘Melee’ style equipment tab instead. Where viable tanking options are lacking, the player might prefer to instead use offensive gear in that slot. Especially when justiciar armour or an elysian spirit shield is already used, it is still very viable to use a tank setup with more offensive hand, feet and jewellery slot equipment instead.
