Mastering Mixology/Strategies Guide – OSRS

General tips

These are some efficiency tips that improves the outcome no matter the strategy used.

Efficient pathing

Efficient pathing mastering mixology

Orders should be prepared at the same station when possible to minimise movement between stations. Using the shortest path between stations and the conveyor belt provides a more efficient outcome from the activity. This can be improved by putting the orders in the inventory in the order that they are going to be made using this path. This will minimize moving items in the inventory since only a click directly on the station will start making the correct potion.

As a general rules, this is the recommended pathing : Crystalise > Concentrate > Homogenise

Time to travel
Station Distance traveled
 Alembic / Crystalise 1 tick
 Retort / Concentrate 2 ticks
 Agitator / Homogenise 1 tick
Conveyor Belt 2 ticks
Total 6 ticks

By grouping orders by station, the total ticks per order should be 6 ticks as a worst case scenario (Having to visit every station in the current order).

Faster preparation

By using player input during the preparation, potions will be made faster and also gives chip herblore experience.

Workstation Process used Tick gain with input Details
Agitator Homogenising 12 / 6(66-33%) Click it once to begin, click again within 2 ticks of the sound/visual effect to speed up the process, click again exactly 1 tick after the previous click to speed up the process a second time. This results in 14 bonus Herblore experience for the first click, and 2 bonus Herblore experience for the second click per potion.

  • If the player’s latency is too high and keeps missing this window regularly, it can be faster to simply not click again rather than incur the progress penalty for missing the window.
  • At the sound/visual cue, players can progress the potion completely by spam clicking.
Alembic Crystallising 6(33%) Click it once to begin, then do so again at the same time as the player pumps the bellows for the 5th time to speed up the process. This results in 14 bonus Herblore experience per potion.

  • If clicked too early or too late, the 14 bonus Herblore experience may still be obtained by clicking again on the 7th pump after the initial failure.
  • The pump count resets if the player leaves the alembic and starts pumping again, though the bonus will not be awarded more than once.
Retort Concentrating 9(50%) Click it constantly every tick to speed up the process, rewarding 2 bonus Herblore experience per click. The total amount of bonus Herblore experience gained varies, as lower-level players can get more clicks in because they take a longer time to process their potions.

If the three orders are not desired, the potion with the most efficient processing speed should be made to resets current orders rapidly.

While preparing the pastes, clicking every tick on refiner also accelerates the creation of pastes between cooking sessions.

Digweed

Digweed doubles the experience and points gained from a potion. They should exclusively be used on MAL recipe, keep it in the inventory otherwise.

Before 81 herblore, it should be used on the recipe that offers the best experience.

Simple priority strategies

Complete full orders

Making all orders makes the most out of the 40% bonus from potions. This is the most straight forward way to play this activity. Some players might find themselves having too many Aga points, since most of the the rewards cost little of them. This can be compensated by buying rewards that costs more green points than the other two (Adept potion pack, for example).

Complete non-triple orders

This method skips the recipes that gives the least experience and the least amount of points, making this more efficient for experience, since the biggest con is that it doesn’t benefit as much from the 20% bonus points that comes with orders that are done at once.

Personalize order priority

Depending on priorities, it might be advantageous to skip less efficient recipes depending on objectives. Use the information on this page the define which one you should skip or complete, depending on your objectives. This activity is a balance between experience, point or resource efficiency.

Some strategies example:

  • Skipping triples, unless a MAL is in the current orders
  • Skipping double of a particular color to get less point that wont be spent on rewards
  • Doing triple orders if there is at least 4-5 of the most needed color

Overview: Resin reward ratios

In order to obtain desired rewards in the Mastering Mixology minigame, players will target quantities of Mox, Aga, and Lye. This guide will provide information on which potion orders to fulfill to optimise points in the resin types.

The table below displays the results of the 20% point bonus for double orders and 40% point bonus for triple orders fulfilled.

Points Rewards by Order Fulfillment
Base Input Points Reward
Single Double Triple
Mox Aga Lye Mox Aga Lye Mox Aga Lye Mox Aga Lye
AAA 0 30 0 0 20 0 0 24 0 0 28 0
MMM 30 0 0 20 0 0 24 0 0 28 0 0
LLL 0 0 30 0 0 20 0 0 24 0 0 28
MMA 20 10 0 20 10 0 24 12 0 28 14 0
MML 20 0 10 20 0 10 24 0 12 28 0 14
AAM 10 20 0 10 20 0 12 24 0 14 28 0

MAL 10 10 10 20 20 20 24 24 24 28 28 28

Ironmen with limited supplies of paste or players with reward targets in mind should consider the reward ratio when deciding which orders to fully or partially fulfill. The single-ingredient bases (AAA, MMM, LLL) are net-negative in all cases when considered on their own. However, in conjunction with higher-reward orders, the contribution to the total reward ratio of the order may be net-positive.

Base Reward Ratio
Single Double Triple
Mox Aga Lye Mox Aga Lye Mox Aga Lye
AAA 0 0.66 0 0 0.8 0 0 0.93 0
MMM 0.66 0 0 0.8 0 0 0.93 0 0
LLL 0 0 0.66 0 0 0.8 0 0 0.93
MMA 1 1 0 1.2 1.2 0 1.4 1.4 0
MML 1 0 1 1.2 0 1.2 1.4 0 1.4
AAM 1 1 0 1.2 1.2 0 1.4 1.4 0
ALA 0 1 1 0 1.2 1.2 0 1.4 1.4
MLL 1 0 1 1.2 0 1.2 1.4 0 1.4
ALL 0 1 1 0 1.2 1.2 0 1.4 1.4
MAL 2 2 2 2.4 2.4 2.4 2.8 2.8 2.8

Note that there are three categories: single-paste, double-paste, and triple-paste.

Prioritise experience per hour

Example of inventory setup for best experience strategy.

This strategy optimizes experience gain but does requires more setup than the more conventional method of simply following the orders. One can expect up to 105k experience per hour with this method, although there is no control over points gained like other methods.

  1. Setup the inventory so that every non-triple types of mix are made in advance with each different type of processing.
  2. Prepare potions that are in the current order list that are non-triple.
  3. Deposit the order on the conveyor belt 2-5 times (The premade potions in the inventory should complete the second order).

Prioritise one resin

Players looking to boost one resin reward should evaluate orders as follows, assuming they are focusing on net-positive use of the relevant paste:

Evaluation of Orders by Target Resin Reward Ratio
Order Composition Target Resin Reward Ratio Action
non-target N/A, complete single order
any double-paste + non-target 1.4 Complete triple order
any single-paste + non-target 0.93 Skip, complete non-target single
XXX + 1X 1.05 Complete triple order
XXX + 2X 1.12 Complete triple order
XXX + XXX + 1X 1 Complete 1X single
XXX + XXX + 2X 1.05 Complete triple order
MAL + any Varies, always >1 Complete triple order

The target resin is designated X. A mix that does not contain the target paste/resin will be called non-target. Because all double-paste mixes have the same reward ratio, 2X scenarios are interchangeable (MMX+MMX vs XXM + non-target).

In simplest terms: single-paste mixes are worth creating in any order that contains other bases with the target resin, and triple orders should always be completed unless they do not contain the target resin or only contain single-paste mixes.

Prioritise total points

Players looking to maximize total points per paste for each order should evaluate orders as follows:

Order Composition Reward Ratio Highest Ratio
Single Double Triple
single-paste only 0.66 0.8 0.93 Complete triple order
two single, one double 1 1 1.09 Complete triple order
two single, one triple 2 1.6 1.55 Complete Mix-A-Lot only
one single, two doubles 1 1.2 1.24 Complete triple order
one single, one double, one triple 2 1.8 1.71 Complete Mix-A-Lot only
two doubles, one triple 2 1.8 1.86 Complete triple order
double-paste only 1 1.2 1.4 Complete triple order
two triples, one single 2 2.4 2.17 Complete Mix-A-Lots only
two triples, one double 2 2.4 2.33 Complete Mix-A-Lots only
triple-paste only 2 2.4 2.8 Complete triple order
  1. Additional work is needed to evaluate the likelihood of each order composition being requested to recommend the best overall decision-making.
