Callisto/Strategies Guide – OSRS

Callisto is a level 470 bear that can be found inside Callisto’s Den. He is killed for the valuable voidwaker hilt, claws of callisto, tyrannical ring, and Callisto cub, though he can also drop the dragon 2h sword and dragon pickaxe.

Warning: Like all Wilderness bosses, Callisto resides in a multi-way area and in level 39 Wilderness. You may be attacked at any time during the kill. Do not bring any items that you are not willing to lose.

Suggested skills

  • Combat level 90 (95+ Recommended)
  • Hitpoints 60 (90+ Recommended)
  • Defence 70 (For Rigour)
  • Prayer 44 (74+ Recommended)
  • Ranged 75 (90+ Recommended)
  • Magic 79 (94+ Recommended)

Setups

Callisto can deal incredibly high melee damage through prayer, so melee combat is not advised. Callisto is no longer immune to magic damage but has a high magic level, so ranged is the ideal method for doing damage. However, the boss will approach targets constantly, so a method of freezing the boss in place is strongly recommended outside of the largest of groups. Spells such as Ice Barrage or Entangle are commonly used. Spells such as Vulnerability, (especially when combined with the Tome of water effect), or even a dragon warhammer are sometimes also used to lower its defence. A charged Webweaver bow has a powerful bonus against Wilderness monsters and can provide the fastest kills, but it carries higher risk compared to other setups. Players (especially Ironmen) who do not have access to the above weapons commonly use a rune crossbow with broad or Ruby bolts (e) in a group for effective damage.

Callisto has very low defence against ranged, and is particularly dangerous when up close. The ideal setup is 3-4 items to maximize ranged strength and accuracy, along with magical defence and tank equipment, such as a Dinh’s bulwark, for PK’ers. In a team, consider having 1 group member equipped with a charged tome of water and runes to cast vulnerability to reduce Callisto’s defence by 15% on a successful hit, increasing the group’s DPS by around 5-7% depending on gear.

Equipment

Inventory

  • Looting bag
  • Stamina potion (for running)
  • Divine ranging potion
  • Antidote++ (to cure poison from poison spiders). Can use Antidote+ mix for extra healing.
  • Some prayer potions
  • Some Blighted ancient ice sacks or Blighted entangle sacks to freeze Callisto.
  • A Royal seed pod to teleport at level 30 Wilderness (if you choose not to wear Amulet of glory)
  • Rest of inventory spaces to be filled with food (you may want to leave 2-3 slots empty for picking up items)

Callisto is fairly vulnerable to Magic. Compared to Ranged, a Magic setup typically results in lesser defences, leaving the player more vulnerable in the event of PKers arriving.

  • Some prayer potions

  • Black d’hide body and chaps (if not already wearing Ranged body and legs) if wanting to try escape PKers
  • Rest of inventory spaces to be filled with food (you may want to leave 2-3 slots empty for picking up items)

How to get there

Entrance to Callisto’s Den
  • With 90 Magic, players on the Ancient spellbook can use Annakarl Teleport, which will teleport them into the Demonic Ruins. Simply go south of your location after arriving. Be wary of PK’ers upon arrival. This is the fastest way to reach Callisto.
    • Alternatives to this also include the Annakarl teleport tablet and a portal attuned to Annakarl. Be wary of PK’ers on arrival; if using the house portal, you should have a scrying pool to check the area first.
  • With 57 Woodcutting, players can make a Waka canoe and use it to go to the Wilderness. Go north-east of your location, but be wary of PKers.
    • Having a royal seed pod makes this strategy more effective as this teleport takes the player close to a gnome glider which they can then take to Al Kharid (specified as Kar-Hewo on the destinations menu) and then walk to the canoe station past the Al Kharid toll gate. This means that the royal seed pod can be used as a lv 30 Wilderness teleport, as a banking tool, and as a way to reach Callisto.
  • If you have neither of these requirements, simply use the games necklace to teleport to the Corporeal Beast’s lair, exit the cave then run up north. Be wary of PKers and the poison spiders if you do not plan to hug the lava river.
  • Players who have completed the Hard or Elite Wilderness Diary can use the Wilderness Sword to teleport to the Fountain of Rune and run south-west to Callisto.

Attacks

A group of players fighting Callisto.
  • Melee: Callisto swipes at the player. This has AoE capabilities and deals massive damage; using Protect from Melee reduces the damage by ~50%.
  • Ranged: Callisto launches crescent-shaped projectiles at everyone in the den if he cannot attack with melee.
  • Knockback: Callisto will launch a white orb-like projectile at a targeted player, which will send them flying backwards and inflict damage if Protect from Magic is not activated when the attack visually hits the player.
    • The knockback attack is a single-target attack with splash AOE. This means that it will only target one player, but the spell will affect all players within a 3×3 square of the targeted player when it hits.
    • The damage the player will take from this attack when it hits them off prayer depends on how far the player can be knocked back before they hit an object (the walls of the arena or any bear traps on the floor). The attack will attempt to knock the player back 3 tiles. If the player can be knocked back the full 3 tiles without hitting an object, they will take 5 damage. This scales up by 15 damage for each tile of knockback that cannot be completed, so the player will take 20 damage if they were 2 tiles away from an object they were pushed into, and 35 damage if they were 1 tile away. If the player is directly next to an object that the attack pushes them into, they will take 50 damage.
  • Bear Traps: At 66% health, Callisto will deploy red, ghostly-like bear traps around the arena. Getting caught in a trap will deal up to 15 damage and briefly bind the player. The traps will be redeployed again at ~33% health and appear afterwards with every attack he makes.

Strategy

Callisto will spawn to the south of the den, right in front of the exit leading into the Escape Caves. If you wish to avoid player killers, it is recommended to place a secondary account waiting outside the entrance to scout potential threats. All players who enter the den will spawn to the north, similar to Venenatis’ lair.

Callisto uses highly damaging melee attacks and is weakest to ranged attacks. Due to hitting much harder, players are recommended to range him. The first immobilizing spell (such as ice barrage) will always land if he is not already frozen, and the attacking player has equipment with a total Magic accuracy greater than or equal to 0. Binds past the first are not guaranteed to hit.

If he cannot attack with melee, he will begin using a much weaker ranged attack until he can reach his target. Callisto will occasionally launch a white orb at his target, of which they should switch on Protect from Magic or risk taking up to 50 damage from the attack.

Upon reaching 66 and 33% of his health, Callisto will roar, launching bear traps all across the arena. Stepping on one will deal up to 15 damage and bind the player for a few seconds. The traps will linger around for a short duration before expiring, but will immediately be replaced with a fresh set of traps. While roaring, he will also glow red, breaking free of binds in the process and requiring a player to refreeze him.

If bringing low risk items, it is recommended that rather than trying to leave via the Escape Caves to rebank, the player instead suicide to Callisto, as they will be able to reclaim items for free as apart from the rares (which should be covered via Protect Item) as none of the drops are individually over 100,000 coins. The player will lose untradeable items such as looting bags however.
