Blast Furnace/Strategies Guide – OSRS

Suggested equipment

It is highly recommended to wear weight-reducing clothing to save run energy while moving heavy ore and smelted bars and for maximum efficiency. To run continuously, stamina potions must be used, therefore run energy restoration rates are irrelevant compared to weight reduction, which is why some other pieces of weight-reducing clothing are preferred over the corresponding graceful pieces. A ring of endurance is marginally helpful. Ironmen might prefer to use the Explorer’s ring and Agility cape’s run energy restores to save stamina potions.

Ice gloves or Smiths gloves (i) are recommended for convenience in retrieving the smelted ore, as when worn the bars are cooled automatically. If not wearing gloves, then a bucket of water is needed in the inventory. A coal bag is highly recommended if using an ore that requires coal, as it nearly halves the required trips. Goldsmith gauntlets are also carried when smelting gold, and swapped to before experience is received. The rest of the inventory should be filled with ore. Stamina potions and gold are withdrawn and used as needed to restore energy and pay fees.

Smithing catalysts can be used to double the experience received for smelting ores that require coal, though they do not further reduce the amount of coal needed in Blast Furnace. It is not recommended to use them here as gathering meaningful amounts of the catalyst takes considerable effort in the Giants’ Foundry, they cannot be purchased for gold, they cannot be used on gold ore, and they each occupy another inventory slot, as they do not stack.

Possible methods

Note: A maximum of 254 coal and 28 primary ore can be deposited in the furnace at once. A maximum of 28 bars of each type can be stored waiting for pickup.

Single-bar method

Smelting a single type of ore into bars is the simplest method of using the Blast Furnace.

Bar patterns

Each bar has an optimal pattern to minimise the amount of running to the bank. Following these patterns you should never have to run back to the bank with ores, and never have to make a trip just to pick up bars. These patterns assume you have a coal bag and ice gloves. It is recommended to collect when returning from coal runs due the delay of smelting (Adamantite and Runite).

  2. Goldsmith gauntlets and Ice Glove switch highly recommended, taking up 1 inventory spot

Hybrid method

By taking advantage of the coal bag, it is possible to combine the smelting of gold ore with mithril, adamantite, or runite ore. This method allows for time-efficient trips for players who wish to reduce the cost of goldsmithing at the Blast Furnace without greatly reducing experience per hour, or for players wishing to add additional experience per hour to traditional single-bar, mithril+ money-making methods at the Blast Furnace.

The method is relatively simple to execute. An inventory consists of a coal bag, goldsmith gauntlets or ice gloves (the other pair being equipped), and 26 gold, mithril, adamantite, or runite ore. Each time a full inventory of gold ore (26) is added to the Blast Furnace, the player will also transport and deposit 26 coal with the coal bag. Every few trips, depending on the ore that is being smelted, the player will forgo an inventory of gold ore to deposit an inventory of the mithril+ ore of their choosing. This will occur every two, three, or four trips depending on if the ore is mithril, adamantite, or runite, respectively.

Hourly rates

All rates assume goldsmith gauntlets are worn when smelting gold, and include the expenditures of 36 doses of stamina potion and 72,000 coins per hour to use the Blast Furnace. Pure gold expects ~250 trips to the conveyor belt per hour, while hybrid patterns expect ~200 trips.

As an example, doing 1,000 trips of adamantite and gold would result in 1,299,130 experience and 6,127,333 coins, while 500 trips of gold followed by 500 trips of just adamantite would result in 1,039,925 experience and 4,767,000 coins.

Bar patterns

The following are the hybrid bar patterns when combining gold and another ore. This method only works on mithril and above, as steel only takes a single trip, eliminating the ability to use the hybrid method. These patterns require a coal bag, and have one less inventory slot due to needing the goldsmith gauntlets in your inventory. It is recommended to prep the Blast Furnace with an additional 26 coal to cut down on any coal transfer wait time when depositing ore.
