After completion of A Kingdom Divided, players can fight Yama.

If the player dies while fighting Yama, they will be placed outside the instance with normal death rules applying. Players will have their reclamation fee reduced by 75% until they have ten kills, after which the standard death cost will apply.

Requirements

  • Completion of Quest points A Kingdom Divided

Attacks

Yama attacks with all three combat styles. He will not actively pursue players to use melee, but will use melee if his target is in melee range. Otherwise, he will use magic and ranged, alternating between the two after using the corresponding elemental attack.

  • Melee: Yama swings his axe at his target.
  • Magic: Yama will snap his fingers, and flames will envelop the players.
  • Ranged: Yama will snap his fingers, and shadows will engulf the players.

In addition, he has the following mechanics:

  • Elemental Strike – Yama will raise his axe in the air to prepare a shadow or fire-based attack, additionally indicated with its corresponding flames surrounding him. Stand in the according glyph in order to avoid damage from the attack. The glyph will be extinguished temporarily after being used. Failing to block the attack in time will deal up to 60 damage, and additionally cause a burning bleed for the fire-based variant.
  • Shadow Waves – Shadow waves will appear across the arena, similarly to the shockwaves created by The Hueycoatl. Failing to avoid these waves can deal up to 20 damage and disables overhead protection prayers.
  • Fire Waves – Streaks of fire will appear moving horizontally across the arena. If the player is hit, they will be rooted momentarily and receive the message “You’ve been seared to the ground!”. Players should take care to not get hit with this attack during Infernal Rockfall.
  • Void Flares – Yama will summon a fire and shadow void flare on the arena, with a timer ticking down. These orbs must be destroyed before the bar fills, or they will explode and deal heavy damage. Alternatively, destroying one of the orbs and standing on the glyph for another will block all damage. The shadow wards will heal Yama for a percentage of their health if allowed to fully expire.
    • Players are guaranteed a maximum hit when attacking either orb with mage or ranged.
  • Teleport – Upon reaching 66.6% and 30% of his health, Yama will teleport the player(s) away to a narrow strip from the arena. A Judge of Yama will be present on the other side and launch fireballs while the player is crossing to it. Getting hit by these fireballs will deal heavy damage. Upon reaching the platform the Judge is on, it will instead use an 1×1 AoE-targeted attack. The Judge will protect against two combat styles and will pray reactively after being attacked by the off-style prayer. Players are guaranteed maximum hits regardless of the combat style used. While fighting the judge, the chamber will periodically shake, dealing up to 7 damage.
    • In a duo encounter, two Judges will spawn and their health is linked.
  • Infernal Rockfall – Yama will send a massive boulder falling down on the player’s position. Their run will be disabled for the duration of this ability. Standing on a fire glyph will protect players from the damage, otherwise they will need to escape its AoE, as indicated with the falling shadow. Failing to move at least two spaces will result in instant death, while being on the edges deals up to 80 damage. Being one tile out of the blast radius will deal 40 damage. Getting damaged will inflict a burn bleed.
  • Shadow Stomp – Yama will send a ground-following shadow attack at the player. Standing on a shadow glyph will protect players from the damage.

Phases

Yama has three phases. The first phase transitions at 2/3 (66.6%) health, and the second phase transitions at 30% health.

Phase 1

The phase starts with three glyphs of one color and two of the other.

The first auto-attack Yama performs is always the opposite of the plentiful glyph present in the arena; e.g if there are more red glyphs than purple, then the first attack will be ranged, and vice versa. Immediately after this opening attack, Yama will launch the opposite element of his opener. Only one player needs to stand directly on the glyph in order to block the attack for both players in duo encounters.

Yama’s next special attack, Fire or Shadow Waves, are dependent on the next glyph in place. If Shadow Waves are used, one wave will appear from either the southwest or southeast.

Phase 3

The same mechanics are repeated as the previous phase, apart from the glyph quantities being reversed. In addition, Yama will replace the fire elemental strike for Infernal Rockfall, and two Shadow Waves are launched at a time.

Phase 5

After returning to the arena, all of the glyphs will be disabled and no longer usable. Players should use Protect from Missiles.

Yama will rapidly summon shadow Void Flares across the arena, lasting until the encounter is finished. Unlike the flares in the previous phase, these spawn with 50% (71) health. In order to kill these in one hit, the player must use Dark Demonbane with Mark of Darkness and a 21% magic damage bonus without the staff. If these are not killed in time, they will heal Yama and additionally damage the player(s) if their health is high enough. A purging staff’s special attack is encouraged for this phase, as it will turn the 5-tick casts into 2-tick when killing the flares.

In a duo encounter, one player should stand west and another east to tackle these flares.

In addition to the flares, Yama will launch three fireballs around a player, which upon impact with the ground will erupt as a hourglass-shaped formation. The centre fireball will never expand, while the side fireballs will converge towards this fireball. Swap to Protect from Magic once the first sequence of fireballs starts, as Yama will launch a magic attack during the fireball attack. Then go back to Protect from Missiles and prepare to avoid the incoming Shadow Waves, which can be used up to four times in a row. Eliminate any void wards if they appear to prevent Yama from healing off them.
